It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Tomas Garibay, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend. Tomas passed away peacefully at home on September 1, 2026, after a valiant battle with kidney failure. Born on March 7, 1946, in Calexico, California, Tomas lived a life full of love, laughter, and dedication to his family and community.
Tomas was the cherished son of Edward and Angelina Garibay, who predeceased him, along with his brother Guadalupe Garibay, sisters Maria Luisa Aleman and Juanita Zamora, and his loving son, Martin Garibay. He is survived by his devoted wife of 60 years, Sara, and their children, Cynthia (Martin) Carpio, Richard (Rhonda) Garibay, Armando (Elvira) Garibay, and Sylvia Orozco. His legacy continues through his eight grandchildren: Keyanna Howard, Gage Garibay, Justin Garibay, Martin Jr. Garibay, Sapphire Garibay, Brendon Garibay, Mikayla Garibay, and Karlee Carpio, as well as one great-grandchild.
Tomas's journey began in Calexico, where he attended Calexico High School before joining the workforce to support his family. He was known for his deep work ethic and spent his career as a proud agriculture worker, including his last employment at Gringo Farms in Brawley, California. Tomas had a profound love for the outdoors, which was evident in his passion for gardening and his cherished white rose bushes and fruit trees.
A man of simple pleasures, Tomas began each day with a hot cup of coffee, often shared with family and friends at the local Panaderia. His love for breakfast was well-known, especially his fondness for a stack of pancakes. Wednesdays were dedicated to treasure hunting at the swap meet, where he collected items full of history and potential.
Tomas was an avid sports enthusiast, with a particular passion for baseball and a loyal devotion to the Dodgers, especially Fernando Valenzuela. He also enjoyed soccer and boxing and loved watching old Pedro Infante movies or a good novela on television.
Known for his quick wit, warm smile, and infectious humor, Tomas had a remarkable ability to make everyone feel welcome and valued. His kindness and generosity left an indelible mark on all who knew him.
A service to honor Tomas's life will be held on September 21, 2026, at 9:00 AM at Frye Chapel, located at 799 S Brawley. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made to the National Kidney Foundation in his memory.
As we say goodbye to Tomas, we hold his memory close to our hearts. He is forever in our hearts, and his legacy of warmth, laughter, and love will continue to inspire us all.
